here, eat this!

While I do some culinary experimenting with recipes from past history and other countries and have been known to foist my creations on friends and family members, I have not gone to the extreme the writer of the Retrolife blog has. She whips up some of the more odd-looking recipes from the 1950s and 1960s, and has discovered that some of them taste as strange as they look. Take a peek here:

waffling

A couple of weeks ago I perfected the technique of making waffles that are “light and fluffy” when fresh and well-cooked, and soft and spongy when the planets fail to align. This was accomplished by making a couple of batches in a row. It seems the secret is to follow the preparation instructions in The Joy of Cooking to the letter, don’t just throw everything into the bowl but dirty up a couple of containers keeping everything they say ought to be separate, separate. And beat the egg whites in their separate bowl, adding them last. Given my sister’s predilection for soft waffles, I thought I would find a ready “taker” for them but suprisingly she didn’t want them for breakfast and having had to eat ‘em all myself, I am now “waffled out”.
